RUSHES 02: Liminale

Bergman's film was shot on 16mm whilst exploring the Isle of Tiree in Scotland, working collaboratively with Joanna Byrne.
Bergman's digital graphic framing serves to counter the elemental nature of the content. The intention is for the viewer to maintain a sense of the physical medium - the analogue and chemical process - alongside the wild natural landscape. The scenes are simple, often unremarkable, to highlight the 'magic trick' that takes place in camera when capturing light to frame air, sea and earth. The intention is to draw attention towards what is often inexplicable and remote, connecting the unpredictable nature of film to the weathering effects of the wild Scottish elements.

Leoni's sound design was created in real time, responding to the film's pulse and flow. It is a conversation between digital and elemental forces, meeting and overlapping, in exchange.

Meeting Halfway

Bergman and Byrne have created a collaborative 16mm film, first screened as an expanded cinema performance for SunUp Arts Festival in 2022. The footage was shot on location at the geographical halfway point between the two small towns where they were born (Bergman in Burnley, Lancs, and Byrne in Maidstone, Kent). The universe, via Google maps, designated this halfway point to be Warwick, a Medieval market town in the West Midlands.

Molecules of light

The project "Molecules of light" as a result of an experiment on light seen through the careful and sensitive eye of the video camera, continues with the making of this video that is entirely dedicated to the triad of moon, sea and sun. These elements merge with the light passing through them, completely losing their material features and creating very special effects. In this way light reveals its vital energy, through the birth of a human life.
